One of the most popular smartwatch families is the Huawei Watch GT. Since their inception, these watches have been an example in terms of design and autonomy and, with the arrival of HarmonyOS , they have risen to the next level when it comes to functions. The first to launch this new operating system in our borders was the Huawei Watch 3 and now it is the turn of the Huawei Watch GT 3 .

And it is that the company has brought to our country its new smart watch, a device that has HarmonyOS 2.1 and a series of improvements in the sensors and the battery. It is, therefore, a kind of version of the previous model (be careful, not a revision) and, as such, it has its strengths and weaknesses. In Xataka we have already had the opportunity to try it and this has been our experience.

Design: premium and huge

Huawei Watch Gt 3 3

We start, as always, talking about design. The Huawei Watch GT 3 is available in two sizes, one 42 millimeters and the other 46 millimeters . The model that we have analyzed is the 46 millimeter, which is the largest. This is important to note, as such a large box may not fit a small wrist.

The watch has the appearance of a classic watch of a lifetime. The front dial is made of stainless steel , while the back is made of polymer fiber. The surface of the back case has ceramic coatings, designed to improve durability in high temperature and humidity situations. It is, in short, a premium watch and it feels like one.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 4

This is something that Huawei has us used to and although it is true that we liked the Huawei Watch 3 a lot, the Huawei Watch GT 3 has that analog clock aura that gives it an interesting little point. The former is more urban and modern, while the one that concerns us today is more conventional. In fact, at first glance it is relatively difficult to differentiate it from the Huawei Watch GT 2 .

In the right area we have a configuration similar to that of the Huawei Watch 3, that is, a lower button that, by default, launches the sports record but that can be remapped (and does not click anything, which is a great pleasure) and an upper crown. The crown is sensational . Not only is it a button, but it also serves to move through the menus while the watch returns feedback in the form of a pleasant vibration. Along with that of the Apple Watch, it is one of the best crowns that we have tested on a smartwatch.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 21

On this side we also find the loudspeaker, which, as we will see later, will help us to answer calls and listen to music . In the left zone, for its part, we have nothing except the microphone. It is a very minimalist design, very beautiful and very simple. The essence of the Huawei Watch GT is more present than ever in this model and it is something that is appreciated. It is a beautiful and functional watch, without frills.

In the lower part we have the charging base and the sensorial one related to health. We are talking about the Huawei TruSeen 5.0+ PPG module , which integrates the heart rate sensor and the pulse oximeter and which has significantly improved compared to the previous generation in both intelligence and photodetectors (there are eight instead of four).

Huawei Watch Gt 3 18

The rear is slightly curved (with a 2.5D finish) to better adapt to the wrist bone, promote breathability and improve the quality of the heart rate signal. At least that is what it does on paper, but the reality is that it does not differ from the rest of Huawei watches . It’s comfortable, but so were previous watches. It is also covered by a Fresnel film whose objective is to improve the amount of light that penetrates the skin.

When it comes to the strap, our review model has a leather strap that is sensational. The silicone and rubber straps are very good (special mention to the one on the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro ), but nothing like the brown leather that we find on this model . It’s a comfortable, nice, premium strap, and simply put, a top-of-the-line strap of its own. It is also available in black fluoroelastomer and stainless steel.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 2

It is a 22-millimeter strap with a standard closure, so if we don’t like it or simply want to take advantage of a strap that we have at home, we can do it without problem. Removing it is very easy. The closure, meanwhile, is a conventional and resistant buckle, so we have not had problems of any kind with it.

In short, we can conclude that the Huawei Watch GT 3 is a comfortable watch, pleasant to use, large (at least the 46-millimeter model) and one that is difficult to fault, at least as far as design is concerned . If Huawei knows anything about making elegant smart watches, the Huawei Watch GT 3 does not disappoint.

Screen: the best we’ve seen

Huawei Watch Gt 3 10

And now that we already know it on the outside, let’s see what the Huawei Watch GT 3 offers us in terms of screen. Something that has characterized these watches since always has been not only their size, but also their resolution and sharpness. Again, the Huawei watch sets the bar very high with an AMOLED screen that we have loved .

Lets start by the beginning. By having two models, 46 and 42 millimeters, the size and resolution of the screen will change. Considering the one we have had the opportunity to analyze, the 46-millimeter, we have a 1.43-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels , which translates into 326 pixels per inch. Its little brother, however, stays at 1.32 inches and 352 dpi.

What does that translate into? In really good visibility. At a safe distance it is practically impossible to see a single pixel . To that we must add a sensational color reproduction and that the interface is perfectly adapted to the form factor. Could the edges have been reduced a little bit? Without a doubt, but at least Huawei has seen fit to engrave a minute hand on them to give, again, that analog clock aroma.

The visibility of the screen is very good in broad daylight. The maximum brightness is high enough so that, even when the light hits it, we can see the time without problem. The watch has automatic brightness and works wonderfully, something that is very appreciated when going from indoors to outdoors, since it avoids having to set the brightness all the time. And it may seem trivial, but not all watches have it.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 19

The screen responds well to our gestures and scrolling between menus is fluid. I would dare to say that at the same height as the Huawei Watch 3 . To turn it on, we can make the gesture of looking at the time or press the button and to turn it off, just put your hand on the screen. As a personal recommendation, activate the “Do not disturb” mode when you wear it to sleep, because it is not pleasant for the screen to turn on by itself and wake us up.

One of the functions that we have lost in this model is the possibility of accepting a call by opening or closing the hand. It is something that we had in the Huawei Watch 3 and that disappears in this model . It is not an excessively important loss, but there it is.

Watchfaces

When it comes to customization, the options are vast. We can have a few spheres installed on the watch, but from the Huawei Health app we can access a huge catalog, both free and paid . There is something for all tastes and colors, so at the consumer’s choice. Some of them are animated and most are interactive. There are also some covers that allow us to modify the complications (the widgets with information) as it is possible to do it on the Apple Watch, for example.

In summary, we can say that the screen of the Huawei Watch GT 3 is a delight . It responds well, it’s big, it looks outrageous and it lives up to a full-fledged high-end watch.

Performance: HarmonyOS returns to the scene (already having room for improvement)

Huawei Watch Gt 3 9

At this point, HarmonyOS cannot say that it is something new. We have seen several products with this operating system, such as a tablet and even the Huawei Watch 3. How could it be otherwise, the Huawei Watch GT 3 has HarmonyOS running through its veins , so your options are not, not by far , the same as the previous Watch GT. But first of all, compatibility.

The Huawei Watch GT 3, like the Huawei Watch 3, is compatible with iOS and Android . To link it to the clock we will have to use Huawei Salud, which is available in the App Store , Google Play and AppGallery . In the case of linking it to an Android mobile, I recommend using the AppGallery version. On the other hand, it should be noted that Huawei Salud is not the same application that we use for headphones or other IoT devices, AI Life. They are two different applications and the one we have to use is the first.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 11

Inside the device we find an unspecified ARM Cortex-M processor that is responsible for moving HarmonyOS . It is accompanied by 32 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. It is not much, especially if we compare the figure with that of the Huawei Watch 3, which was 16 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM.

The HarmonyOS interface is similar to the one found in LiteOS, Huawei’s previous operating system that we find in watches like the Huawei Watch GT 2. If you already have a watch from the brand, you will surely feel at home . If not, you will soon discover that the interface is very intuitive.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 6

By sliding to the right we will access the widgets , such as the weather, music or Celia (which we will talk about -bit- later) and by sliding to the left we will see the different screens with shortcuts to the heart rate, daily activity, the sleep, etc. Swiping up will open the notifications and sliding down the quick settings panel.

Pressing on the crown we will open the application drawer. By default, the apps are arranged in a grid in the purest Apple Watch style . If we move the crown we will zoom in or zoom out and by clicking on the icons we will open the apps in question. The app catalog is enough to get the most out of the watch, but having HarmonyOS under the hood has an advantage: third-party applications can be installed.

Having HarmonyOS allows the watch to access third-party apps hosted on AppGallery, although the catalog is still scarce.  Thanks to HarmonyOS, Huawei watches can access the apps hosted on the AppGallery. The problem is that, unlike what happens on the Huawei Watch 3, AppGallery is not installed on the watch . We have to use the mobile app to download the applications and then send them to the clock. A small handicap that could well be solved by means of a software update.
Appgallery

The problem is that the number of supported applications is very small. Not all of them are useful and some important apps are missing, such as Spotify . We have counted 28 applications in total, a figure that is too low and among which only Petal Maps , Huawei’s maps app stands out . In that sense, AppGallery has room for improvement.

Another element that we have missed in this watch is the eSIM compatibility . In this way, we will not be able to use the watch independently of the mobile to make and receive calls, for example. What’s more, the phone app is not used to make Bluetooth calls, it is simply a record of recent calls. We also lose the option of streaming music from Huawei Music, which was one of the great highlights of the Huawei Watch 3. We also don’t have NFC (which makes sense, since Huawei Pay is not available in Spain).

Huawei Watch Gt 3 13

When it comes to clock performance, the device performs very well . Applications open fast, navigation is smooth, and the overall experience with it has been very positive. It’s funny, because objectively speaking it is less powerful than the Huawei Watch 3, but it moves just as smoothly. It is, in short, a joy to use.

The clock allows us to receive notifications from the apps we want, but not respond to them. For example, if we receive a message on WhatsApp, we can read its content, but not respond to the message , not even with predetermined quick responses. A shame, of course.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 17

We can also receive mobile calls on the watch, and even accept and make them through it . The microphone is quite good and the speaker behaves. We have made several calls from the watch and we have not had any problems. It is an interesting addition and it is appreciated that it is there.

Then we have Celia , Huawei’s virtual assistant. In the Huawei Watch 3 the assistant worked perfectly (within its obvious limitations in terms of integration with home automation), but not in the Huawei Watch GT 3 . If we want to use the assistant, we will need a Huawei mobile with EMUI 10.1 or higher, something that I, personally, have not had during this analysis. In other words, without a Huawei mobile there is no worthwhile virtual assistant.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 12

We thus go on to talk about health monitoring. The Huawei Watch GT 3 incorporates the Huawei TruSeen 5.0+ PPG module , which has eight photodiodes instead of four and improved algorithms that, on paper, should improve the reading of our metrics.

When it comes to heart rate , the watch measures it every five minutes throughout the day. It seems to us that it does so quite precisely, but in any case it should be noted that neither this watch nor any other is a medical device, so the data must be taken with tweezers and taken for what they are: indicative data.

Heart rate

The watch also measures the oxygen level in the blood in real time . This can be useful if we combine it with the altimeter, especially if we like mountain sports. However, blood oxygen tests require that we be as still as possible during them, so it is likely that the figures obtained by the watch while walking, for example, are not entirely reliable. Again, a piece of information that must be taken with a grain of salt.

Spo2

Another aspect that the Huawei Watch 3 monitors is sleep . The watch measures it quite precisely and, sticking to our mood the next day, we can conclude that it is accurate. The report generated in the app allows us to see the phases, the times we have woken up, the quality of breathing and more information.

Sueno

Fourth, the device measures stress in a somewhat imprecise way. The figures offered by the watch do not match at all with our mood during the day and, in fact, I doubt that he had 67 stress points (more is worse) at 2:57 in the morning, while he was sleeping, or on Sunday in the afternoon while eating rice with the family. It doesn’t seem like a reliable metric to me.

Stress

On the other hand, the Huawei Watch GT 3 measures our body temperature . It does this every one hour and the figure helps us to see if, for example, we are cold at night or if we have a higher temperature than the account. It can be useful depending on the context, but it is not an indispensable metric in the day-to-day life, far from it.

Skin Temperature

Finally, Huawei has pulled health challenges out of its sleeve . By telling you what we want to improve, the app generates a personalized challenge that consists of, for example, drinking X amount of water, taking X steps, smiling, breathing or resting X number of hours. Our progress is measured by the growth of the leaves of a clover. It is a way of gamifying well-being, but unfortunately it does not go much further.

Healthy life

In short, the Huawei Watch GT 3 is a shortened version of the Huawei Watch 3 . It has fewer features and more dependence on mobile for everything. However, as we will see later, this lack of functions is compensated by a substantial improvement in autonomy.

Doing sports with the Huawei Watch GT 3

Huawei Watch Gt 3 15

What is a smart watch if we cannot take it with us when we do sports? The Huawei Watch GT 3 has a good number of sports modes , including popular ones like running, swimming or hiking, but also skiing or triathlon. What it doesn’t have is paddle tennis, which is my personal crusade in the world of wearables .

When we start an exercise we can see its own metrics, in addition to controlling music playback . In that sense, we can listen to the music or podcasts that we have imported into the memory of the clock (ideal if we connect a Bluetooth headset) or the one that is playing on the mobile. Remember that we cannot stream music on this model.

The watch is water resistant to 5 ATM (50 meters), but I personally do not recommend that we wear it with the leather strap. If we are going to use it for swimming, it is better to remove the leather strap and put a silicone strap on it so that it does not deteriorate. When we finish exercising underwater, we can drain the water from the watch itself, which will start to emit sounds from the speaker.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 16

Another aspect that should be noted is that the Huawei Watch GT 3 has an integrated GPS chip , which makes it extremely absurd that to show the time of our location we have to give permanent access to the GPS to the Huawei Health app.

That said, the watch’s GNSS chip is dual-band (L1 and L5) and supports five systems (GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS). It fixes us much faster than previous models and its precision, without being the best, is really good . Something interesting is the inverse path function, which saves the path we have followed so that, if we get lost, we can retrace our steps.

Battery: the peace of mind of arriving at the week

Huawei Watch Gt 3 5

When we analyzed the Huawei Watch 3 this section left us with a somewhat bitter taste in our mouths. The Huawei Watch GTs had always been synonymous with good autonomy and the arrival of HarmonyOS to the Huawei Watch 3 did not sit well in these terms. The Huawei watch offered us up to two days of autonomy, a figure too low for what we were used to.

With the Huawei Watch GT 3, the company has taken action on the matter. The device mounts a 455 mAh battery, which is almost the same figure as the Huawei Watch 3, but its autonomy has skyrocketed for at least a week . During our tests, we have used it connected to the mobile at all times and with real-time monitoring and it has reached the week without problem.

Huawei Watch Gt 3 22

With a more basic use, I have no doubt that it would be possible to reach two weeks without difficulty . However, the truth is that the final autonomy will depend on how much we use the watch, how many notifications we receive, whether we use it to call, whether or not we use GPS a lot, etc. Be that as it may, the week comes without a problem.

As for charging, it is carried out through a wireless charging base included in the box. It takes about an hour and a half to complete , which is not bad if we take into account the final autonomy. In short, and as far as battery is concerned, the Huawei Watch GT 3 is what the Huawei Watch 3 should have been.

Huawei Watch GT 3, the opinion of Engadget

Huawei Watch Gt 3 23

After having tested the Huawei Watch GT 3, we can conclude that it is a watch to take into account. It is beautiful, it works well and it has improved one of the aspects in which the Huawei Watch 3 sinned, which is autonomy. It is, in short, a solvent watch that will probably serve the vast majority of users who are looking for a good design and certain smart functions.

However, it continues to have the same problems as many other smartwatches of the company: it lacks a complete ecosystem of third-party applications, for now; It does not integrate with home automation, it does not have a mobile payment system and it does not allow to respond to notifications. As a Huawei watch, it is the best. As a smartwatch in general, it still has room for improvement .

As a Huawei watch, it is the best. As a smartwatch in general, it still has room for improvement

The thing, therefore, is as follows: as a cheap premium alternative it is the best next to the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro , which is also very good. As the most complete smartwatch on the market, it continues to lag behind the Apple Watch , the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and many other smartwatches with WearOS .
