Huawei says that

A few days ago, Huawei announced that its Q4 2022 sales grew by 7.2% compared to last year. Huawei’s sales for the whole year stood at around CNY 636.9 billion, a figure slightly higher than that of 2021. Nothing boded these figures given the global context and the situation of the company after the US veto. How have you managed it despite the US lockdown and the slowdown in smartphone sales?

New sources of income

What has happened is that the company opened up alternative sources of income, including the sale of patents. It also sold technology and services to new clients such as automakers, mining companies and industrial parks. It even started collecting patent royalties from Apple, Samsung and other companies. According to Alan Fan, Huawei’s global director of Intellectual Property, the Chinese company signed more than 20 patent license agreements in 2022, covering connected cars, IoT, networks and smartphones. According to Xu, “in 2022, we have successfully exited crisis mode. US restrictions are now our new normal, and we are back to normal. The macro environment may be plagued with uncertainties, but what we can be sure of is that digitization and decarbonization are the way forward, and therein lie the opportunities for the future.”

Development of own capacities

Reports claim that Huawei has spent the past three years researching, developing, and sourcing alternative technologies and components to US solutions. The company has even confirmed that it has achieved a breakthrough in the EUV lithography process with the China National Intellectual Property Administration. If its patent application is approved, Huawei could stop relying on ASML, Samsung or US technologies to make advanced sub-10nm smartphone chipsets. However, things are not so simple. No one can confirm whether Huawei can really make an EUV lithography machine. Despite everything, Huawei may never be able to regain the right to include GMS (Google Mobile Services) in its smartphones and tablets. Without GMS, most people outside of China may never buy Huawei smartphones because they won’t have official access to services like Gmail, Google Driver, Google Maps, Google Pay, Google Photos and YouTube, which people rely on every day. .
