They have not stepped on number one since the beginning of 2021

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro has been a breath of fresh air for the Chinese market

More than three years later, Huawei returns to the top of the sales list of mobile phones in China. In May 2019, the United States included a Huawei that was experiencing an extremely sweet moment in both its network and mobile phone business (with the brand new Huawei P30 Pro just released) on your blacklist.

The one known as ‘veto Huawei’ seemed to condemn the company in the West, and although it has had a bad time in China, it has become very strong in its territory. So much so that he is not only standing up to the United States with the controversial Huawei Mate 60 ProbutIt has eaten Apple in China and has ambitious plans for 2024.

They reach number one again for the first time since 2020

During years, Huawei remained one of the strongest players in the mobile market. In the West he was playing his cards very well with premium models (with two families, in fact) and with a wide variety of terminals in both the mid-range and entry-level.

Furthermore, with Honor I had a very interesting reinforcement, but the US veto changed everything. The fall It was even noticed in China, a territory in which the brand dominated with an iron fist. In the West, this collapse was somewhat logical because they did not have access to Google’s mobile services – the GMS -, but in China, where that matters very little, the drop was capital.

They went from having a 41% market share in the third quarter of 2020 to only 16% in the first quarter of 2021. Companies like OPPO and Vivo were eating the toast, but both Apple and Xiaomi, which respectively had remained far away in China, were also very close.

However, Huawei’s situation changed radically in 2023. After a practically silent first half of the year, in the summer they announced the Huawei Mate 60 Pro. It was a terminal that brought a lot of controversy because, according to the United States, it had been built using illegal components.

The reason? Ride the Kirin 9000Sa SoC manufactured in 7 nanometers with an integrated 5G modem, a technology far from the cutting edge Apple A17 Pro, Dimension 9300 either Snapdragon 8 Gen 3but which showed that, despite the restrictions, Huawei had found a way to avoid the technological veto.

Its alliance with SMIC (which now is going to lend a hand to Huawei again for its new Kirin chips) allowed the company to access the technology, but on the software side there were also news. They presented HarmonyOS Next (which will break even further with Android, even preventing Android apps from running on Huawei in China) and closed the year with 10% more in income.

His plans are very ambitious and they wait sell twice as many mobile phones this year, but what they have already achieved is to place themselves as the first in their native country. In it recent report From Counterpoint, analysts place Huawei as the brand that has sold the most mobile phones during the first two weeks of 2024.

This is the first time he has achieved it after the aforementioned downturn and the resurgence has two keys: The first is the launch of the Mate 60 Pro 5G which showed that, once again, Huawei had a mobile phone in the highest range. In addition, the factor of Chinese users’ loyalty to the brand also comes into play.

Now, from the report, and as we read in SCMP, it points to a very complicated situation that Huawei will have to face from now on. And the thing is, they have once again been number one in sales, but once again they will have to compete against the highest ranges of Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and… Apple.

In fact, the Well-known analyst Ming-chi Kuo claims that Apple has been the main victim of Huawei. So much so that Apple’s shipments to China in recent weeks have decreased between 30 and 40% (according to Kuoclear).

In the international market, the movie is totally different, with Apple and Samsung dominating the market globally.
