Huawei and Nokia have once again renewed their partnership in a mobile technology patent agreement. The Chinese company officially announced the extension of the contract. The terms of the contract, however, are confidential between the parties. The multi-year patent license agreement between the companies was first signed in 2017. The latest extension reflects Huawei’s prowess in different technologies, which continues to grow despite the pressure and US sanctions that the Chinese company has been facing since 2019.
The royalties that Huawei will receive will finance its research and development efforts, which have not stopped despite bans from the giant nation.
O Huawei’s R&D investment were around BRL 110 billion in 2021, which represents about 22.4% of its annual revenue. Furthermore, Huawei filed a record 6,952 patents last year — of those, 3,500 patent applications were filed with the European Union patent office. More than 110,000 active patents are estimated globally by the end of last year.
Huawei has also already signed a multi-year cross-licensing patent sharing agreement with 20 other rivals, such as Samsung and Oppo – this one is responsible for providing the company with 5G network and technology.
