Huawei Mate 50, new confirmations for Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

There are new confirmations regarding the adoption of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for Huawei Mate 50, whose presentation is scheduled for September 6: the well-known Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station returned to the topic. Important clarification: we are talking about the “smooth” chip at the beginning of the year, codenamed Waipio, not the Plus variant released just a couple of months ago (Palima code). As we know, between the two chips Qualcomm has changed foundry, from Samsung to TSMC, due to problems of yield and efficiency of the production process; consequently, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus are significantly better, both from the thermal point of view and from the point of view of energy consumption.

Another important clarification, even if you probably expect it: it will be one special version of the chip without 5G modem. Huawei will have to be satisfied with 4G connectivity only: these are still the aftermath of the ban imposed by the United States a few years ago. In fact, we can speak more of a concession: the initial ban provided for the absolute prohibition of purchasing components from American companies or companies based on predominantly American technology.

Huawei managed to find a compromise to stay afloat, but had to give up next-generation connectivity (which was the US government’s main concern). There are rumors that at least on the most prestigious models this year there will be 5G, but for now the skepticism remains. In any case, for the same reason, Huawei’s smartphones will not mount Android or Google services. They will be replaced by HarmonyOS with Huawei services.

Recall that the Mate 50 range should consist of four models: one cheap, one “standard”, one Pro and one RS. Apart from the first, which will have Snapdragon 778G (also here, always with connectivity limited to 4G), the other three devices will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Let’s recap the main expected technical specifications:
