How will the new WiFi 6E that has just been launched benefit you?

Since the beginning of the year, the decision of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States about the future of WiFi. This decision has arrived, and with it, the way is opened towards a future in which the use of the Internet will be faster and smarter. Is the jump to WiFi 6E.

The FCC has unanimously approved the adopting new rules to open up a new portion of the spectrum for WiFi use because of the increase in connected devices that are expected in the coming years. It was the step it took to start rolling out the next wireless connectivity standard worldwide after it was approved in other parts of the world like in Europe.

This new standard, WiFi 6E, represents the most significant advance that has been applied in this area in the last 15 years. It houses the additional 1,200 Mhz spectrum that works without a license in the 6 GHz band and that it is expected to be two times faster than the current standard. In 2003 the use of two bands was approved, which means that the old WiFi 4, 5 and 6 have been limited to the two WiFi bands, at 2.4 and 5 GHz.

The main objective is to make room for all the devices that will be added in the coming years with the irruption of the IoT or other technologies. At home, more and more appliances and tools are accumulating that require a WiFi connection to offer their smart services and control them remotely.

Technology companies have celebrated this news; that the FCC has approved this change means Amazon, for example, pave “the path to a more innovative future and enable us to deliver a smarter, faster and more convenient customer experience.

However, not everyone has received the change well. Other companies and utilities have raised concerns about interference from the further use of WiFi. AT&T Inc considers that the decision “will allow the introduction of devices that can damage, or even eliminate, the links in the networks that monitor our electricity network” as they have explained to Reuters.

What benefits will WiFi 6E bring?

These 1,200 MHz used by the WiFi 6E can be divided into 14 non-overlapping channels of 80 MHz or 7 of 160 MHz, which will allow much higher transfer rates on devices connected to the same network. The more channels, less interference will occur in the connections between different devices and communication will be smoother and faster.

What’s more, they will not compete with all the devices that we already have connected. By jumping into the 6 GHz frequency band, only new-generation products may use this new standard that is compatible, leaving the lower groups to be current and old devices.

Later we will see how they reach mobile stores, tablets, televisions, as well as new routers and appliances with WiFi 6E. Yes, both connection points must be compatible with this standard to understand each other, but that does not mean that the new products cannot work with a router without WiFi 6E. The new standard will be backwards compatible, i.e. It will be compatible with WiFi 6, WiFi 5, WiFi 4 …

Both chipmakers and antenna providers are already working on this implementation to support the millions of connected devices that are slated to appear in the coming years.
