It’s great news all round for Tallaght as it found itself within the top 5 listing in the latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (Ibal) which also shows increased litter levels in Dublin city centre and in disadvantaged areas of Galway, Limerick and Cork.

The City Centre is no longer deemed clean but there’s been a big improvement in Tallaght and the North Inner City. Irish Business Against Litter named Ennis as the cleanest town in Ireland at a ceremony this afternoon.

No area in Dublin made the top three but the roads around the airport came 4th, Tallaght 5th and Balbriggan came 10th. That means it’s cleaner than European norms.

According to the 2017 survey, there was a fall in the prevalence of fast food wrappers, plastic bottles and dog fouling. Chewing gum, cigarette butts and cans, however, continue to be major sources of litter. A total of 40 per cent of towns and cities surveyed were judged to be cleaner than the European average. In contrast, city areas occupied six of the bottom seven places in the rankings.
