Pixel 7a was officially announced during the opening keynote of Google I / O 2023, last week, after being anticipated by an impressive amount of rumors. As also highlighted in our review, this smartphone really has a lot in common with its older brother, the Pixel 7, from which it differs only in certain aspects, small things, which could even lead to prefer it considering the list prices.

WHAT CONVINCED US OF THE PIXEL 7A
One of the aspects that particularly convinced us is the photographic sector where the Pixel 7a proved to be almost top of the lineeven if it lacks the telephoto lens and the front camera is not the best.
Compared to Pixel 6a, the photographic sector has been completely revised: the 64MP main camera it has a 72% larger sensor, which allows it to capture 44% more light; L’ultra wide angle has a 13MP sensor with f / 2.2 aperture and a field of vision of 120°. We also definitely liked the display, a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED with refresh rates up to 90Hz.

DXOMARK TESTED THE CAMERA
Camera and display of the Pixel 7a are were also tested by DxOMark: in the first case, the French laboratory awarded him a total of 133 pointsplacing it at 27th place in the global ranking and al 2nd place of smartphones that have a price between 400 and 600 dollars. As for the display, however, he was given 140 points which earned him the 11th place in the standings and the first in its price range.
Going into more detail, according to DxOMark the Google Pixel 7a has delivered excellent performance when it comes to photo quality in relation to its category, improving slightly on the Pixel 6a. In general, they have been highlighted very similar performance to the Pixel 7with which it also shares the Google Tensor G2 processor, especially as regards photos and zoom.
In DxOMark tests, the Google Pixel 7a delivered very good quality especially in still images which showed a faithful rendering of colors and skin tones. However, while the images showed a high level of detail in most lighting conditions, the Pixel 7a still couldn’t quite match the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
The Google Pixel 7a is in fact equipped with a dedicated ultra-wide-angle camera with a very wide field of view for its category, but the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens reduces the level of detail when zoomed in. In video mode, however, the Pixel 7a performed generally well in most conditions, despite some “weaknesses” in color rendering and detail.
THE PROS AND CONS OF THE CAMERA ACCORDING TO DXOMARK
These are the “Pros” highlighted by DxOMark:
- Natural colors and white balance in photos
- Effective video stabilization
- Good exposure in both photos and videos
- Fast and stable autofocus
- Accurate depth estimation in bokeh mode
- Wide field of view of the ultra-wide camera
These are the “Cons”:
- Loss of detail in videos
- Underexposed video in more difficult portrait scenes
- Noise both indoors and in low light conditions
- Limited depth of field
- Unstable white balance in bright light and indoor video
- Circular artifacts in video, blending artifacts in photos
DXOMARK HAS ALSO TESTED THE DISPLAY
The performance offered by the displayas mentioned, place the Google Pixel 7a in 11th place in the DxOMark global ranking and in first place in the “High-End” segment, thanks to a score of 140. The display of the Google Pixel 7a, in the DxOMark tests, showed is a good color rendering in all lighting conditions that notable improvements in motion and touch sensitivity as well as good handling of dropped frames.
The Pixel 7a’s display was rated suitable for indoor use, where it offers adequate readability along with very good color rendering and uniformity. When playing games, according to DxOMark
“users will enjoy a good experience thanks to a smooth, precise and responsive smartphone display, as well as precise aliasing control”.
However, when used outdoors, the lack of brightness of the Google Pixel 7a can make it more difficult to view images
According to the findings, while it achieves the same overall score as the Google Pixel 7, it achieves it in a different way. While the Pixel 7 did in fact perform significantly better in color, motion and touch, the Pixel 7a has some more limitations on readability. It also lacks detail in darker shades when watching HDR10 video, and tilting it shows colorful artifacts.
