It seems that Google’s official protective cases for its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro age very badly – and very quickly: just a few months after their arrival on the market, photos are already multiplying online that show them significantly discolored and yellowed, often with spots of particularly intense hue, and deformed, especially near the buttons.
The photos, as you can see on this page, seem to illustrate a super cheap case with years of use (and abuse) on its back, and instead it’s about official products from 29 €. Ironically, Google notes that more than 30% of the plastic used in the manufacturing of the case is recycled, but so much so if the entire product has to be thrown away after a few months.
Reddit posts and online reviews indicate that the phenomenon is widespread and that Google is aware of it. Many say they have gotten a refund and that the company has requested that the defective product be returned (at its expense). Some say the first signs of discoloration appeared just a few days after the purchase. It’s hard to understand exactly what happened, but it seems pretty clear that Google (or whoever actually made the enclosures anyway) somehow got the formula or manufacturing process wrong.
For the moment, Google has limited itself to replacing the defective case but has not expressed itself further on the issue. However, a small “controversy within the controversy” is emerging, as several company insiders confirm that the warranty / assistance is valid only for products purchased directly on the Google Store, and not at other retailers such as Amazon. There is no need to make too many parallels because the American laws that regulate this type of situation are very different from ours, however Amazon seems to replace or refund the cases to those who complain about them.
