The Google Messages application has lost its integration with the Google Assistant and is apparently replacing the feature with another called “Spotlights” (or highlights, in free translation).
You could access the Assistant via the shortcut on the Attach ‘plus’ button on the left to bring up the weather, restaurants and movies and include them in the ongoing conversation. But the Assistant’s online conversation suggestions and trio of buttons are gone.
even on access Messaging Settings > Suggestions Removed mentions of Google Assistant suggestions. This includes the example and toggle, while supporting documents for the feature were similarly phased out after September 2022.
However, at the very least, there is a rework (far right above) that removes the example carousels to just descriptions. Just to replace some Assistant functions, Messages is working on a feature called “Spotlights” to “get instant information and convenient actions from Google Apps”. Through device location, it displays local results, close to where the message is sent.
Apparently Messages will highlight/underline places in chats and allow the user to tap on it and be forwarded to check out more information from Google Search/Maps. With this, it will be easier to get directions to an address, call, see a restaurant menu and even place an order.
The removal of the messaging app assistant is yet another manifestation of the feature’s reduced reach. And so far, new features of Spotlight have not been revealed and what will actually replace the old tool.
