The use of artificial intelligence has allowed Google engineers to significantly improve the functionality and capabilities of the Google Maps program , which provides access to interactive maps online. Company representatives announced this in an interview with CNBC reporters.

In particular, thanks to AI, it was possible to optimize the search for charging stations for electric vehicles. AI also contributed to improving the quality of terrain visualization in the application and made it possible to introduce an event recommendation function, which is based on an analysis of user preferences.

“AI technologies have significantly improved the efficiency of our mapping services,” said Chris Phillips, vice president and general manager of the geographic department at Google. He also noted that Google Maps now not only helps to better navigate in space, but also offers information about restaurants and current announcements of events. The company said that one of the popular queries in the application is “What to visit in…?”, where users indicate the name of the city. In response to such requests, Google Maps now offers more personalized recommendations and provides a list of activities categorized by category.

Google Research engineers also introduced a new Immersive View feature in Google Maps, which allows you to virtually visit various places and objects using NeRF technology, which converts standard images into 3D. This update makes it easier for users to navigate and gives them the opportunity to get to know the city and its attractions in advance.

Additionally, in May the company added a new tool to Google Maps that allows users to see what streets looked like in the past, thanks to archival images stored in Google Street View since 2007.
