Google Fit will measure respiratory and heart rate with the smartphone camera

Google Fit has just received one of the most interesting news for the health of users: in an attempt to follow the example of Apple Watch in diagnosing heart disease, now the Big G application will allow measure the respiratory rate and heart rate simply via the camera of the Android smartphone.

To do this, as explained by Google itself, it will be enough place the phone on a stable surface and make the front camera correctly display the person of interest from the waist up, thus clearly showing the upper torso and entire head. Next, Google Fit will show a full screen interface with live feed asking you to stay still and breathe normally, so as to allow the system to measure as accurately as possible how many breaths are taken per minute.

To measure them, the app relies on the small movements of the chest captured by the camera; for heart rate, Google Fit asks you to place your finger on the rear main lens and apply light pressure. Activating the flash to increase accuracy in case you are in dark environments is not necessary, but it remains useful without a doubt.

The data obtained from the application at the end of the test – from the duration of about 30 seconds – they can be saved in the system in order to monitor any daily changes. As explained by Google itself, however, “These results are not intended for medical purposes and should not be used to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or medical condition”, ergo they can only serve as a “reference” for one’s physical activity and to measure personal well-being.
