In the Android store there is a new Google app that allows the installation of new devices: named Device Utility, the application enables to register the Chromecast and Nest in the Google account, without Google Home. It is available for most Android phones and tablets.

Google is experiencing certain legal problems in the field of audio devices: after a lawsuit filed by Sonos, the Nest and Chromecast cannot use certain functions that they had until now. And, apart from that impossibility with the audio, Google was forced to unfold the registration of new devices from the Home app. The result is a new application.

“Device Utility”, the app to register new devices

Until now, any user who needed to register a Google Nest or Chromecast device to their account needed to access setup through Google Home. Such access is still available, although the company starts diverting installations through a new app dedicated to just the task: Device Utility. The app is newly created and has only been available in the Play Store for a few days.

Device Utility allows you to add devices to the Google account in order to avoid the inconvenience caused by the Sonos lawsuit against Google. As highlighted by 9to5Google, the new app is essential for the installation of new Chromecast and Nest, at least in certain parts of the world (mainly the United States). We recently installed a Nest Hub and had no problems going through the process with Google Home.

Device Utility can be installed on most phones and tablets running Android 6.0 and higher. Once the app starts, it will ask you to activate Bluetooth (to discover new devices) and deactivate WiFi (to create an access point and run the configuration). If there are new Chromecast or Nest nearby Device Utility will discover them, install them to the Google account and will leave the devices ready to be controlled from the Google Home app.

In principle, you do not have to download the application since to install a Nest or Chromecast Google Home should still suffice. If this installation is not supported, Google will ask to download Device Utility. From the ratings given in the Play Store file, it does not seem that the new app to register devices is to the liking of users: they report configuration errors and a somewhat slow experience.
