The Google Contacts application has received a new tablet interface that brings greater convenience to those devices with a large screen. Another novelty is the possibility of activating birthday notifications from the user’s address book.

The new Google Contacts interface now features a navigation trail and in the upper left corner are the buttons “Create”, “Contacts”, “Highlights” and “Resolve and manage” now more easily accessible with the thumb.

The home screen is a double column with the contact list on the left and details on the right, while the “Featured” and “Resolve & Manage” screens use a single centered column with plenty of white space on the sides and a large toolbar . This redesign was detected in Google Contacts version 4.3.

The new “birthday notifications” feature spotted by 9To5Google in the Google Contacts application code allows the user to choose friends and family they want to be notified about when their birthdays come up.

For any contact with a birthday listed, the top right menu will include a new “Add Birthday Notification” option. Also, if someone’s birthday is imminent, the reminder included in the contact page will also offer an “Add Notification” button.

For now, there doesn’t seem to be a way to enable notifications for all contacts at once. User needs to enable for each person, but preferences will sync across devices.
