It is not new that technology companies have cut a large part of their payroll, and the scenario is no different with so-called Big Techs. However, Google and Amazon are fighting to be able to lay off their workers in Europe. The information is from Bloomberg.

Until then, dismissals were concentrated in the United States, with remnants in other countries. However, in Europe, the companies found an impasse. This is because the labor laws of some countries prevent employees from being dismissed abruptly.

In other words, the norms in these “Old Continent” locations – such as France and Germany – force companies and their employees to reach an amicable agreement, with prior consultations with interest groups.

In French territory, Alphabet – parent company of Google – has been negotiating voluntary departures of employees upon payment of generous indemnities. In the case of the German arm of Amazon, the path was to induce senior managers to resign, in exchange for paying bonuses in the form of company shares.

Google also walks the line prescribed by law in France and Germany, opening negotiations with works councils before decrees of dismissals. However, such a request takes time to collect information, negotiations and analysis of the resource, until the action is validated.

On the other hand, the United Kingdom and Ireland are places where labor protections are not as stringent. Despite this, sources say talks with the works council will result in confidential severance packages.
