The new version offers a communication option via GitHub Discussions and allows fast navigation between files in the file tree.

GitHub has released an update of the GitHub Enterprise Server. Version 3.6 adds GitHub Discussions, offers changed handling of files and provides some beta security features for customers with a GitHub Advanced Security license. In addition, the new Server Statistics function allows insight into aggregated server key metrics. For example, admins can use this to see how teams use GitHub Enterprise Server across server instances.

In GitHub Enterprise Server 3.6, users can now exchange their ideas and ask and answer questions in the GitHub Discussions area. This should allow GitHub issues to focus on progress and plans. GitHub Discussions has been considered stable since August last year, but apparently hasn’t been available in GitHub Enterprise Server until now.

The handling of files is also new in version 3.6: With the help of the file tree, users can now navigate to files and thus quickly jump back and forth between different files. This should make the scope of a review more visible at a glance.

For GitHub Advanced Security customers, GitHub Enterprise Server 3.6 offers some new security beta features. This includes that the enterprise-level security overview page now shows all types of warnings, including those from Dependabot and code scanning.

Another beta feature is a new API and a new GitHub action for the Dependency Review. This can be used to configure the enforcement of dependency reviews to prevent vulnerable dependencies from entering the code base. When dismissing a security warning, developers can now add a comment to justify this step.
