When we talk about cloud adoption, we can classify companies into two large groups: those that have already made the leap and those that are only a matter of time before they do so. And in the latter case, in most cases the fear or lack of interest in its adoption has, as a reason for being, the lack of knowledge about what cloud software offers us, as well as the doubts about complexity which may lead to its adoption.

And no matter how much they tell us, having a little suspicion is more than understandable, since a change of these characteristics can substantially affect our company, and SMEs already have enough difficulties in these times, as well as to jump into such a deep pool without having references about the temperature and buoyancy of the water, bottom depth, and so on. It is not lack of interest, it is common sense.

Thus, being very aware of this situation, GetApp has carried out a complete study in which it has collected the testimonies of more than 610 Spanish SMEs from various sectors, in order to take the pulse of the implementation of cloud software in the business fabric in our country. A very interesting study, since it shows us that there are already many SMEs that have made the leap and, what is even more important, that their experience in this regard has been tremendously positive.

And what data can we extract from this study? Although GetApp has published a lot of information about it, there are some especially noteworthy points, which can help those SMEs that are still at the point of considering whether to make the leap to cloud software. That is why, below, we are going to reel off some of those points.

Over the last 18 months there has been a huge increase in cloud software adoption, mainly as a result of the pandemic, which has forced many companies of all sizes and sectors to adopt telecommuting strategies overnight.

This has led to up to 45% of the SMEs that have participated in the GetApp study have had to make unforeseen investments in cloud software, investments that in 90% of the cases exceeded the planned budget by between one and 50 percent. Something that, in principle, has an undoubtedly negative reading. However, based on the following data, it seems that we are facing a serendipity.

And, according to the study, nothing less than 89% of companies say that cloud software has been a support when facing the complex situation that we have lived through for the last year and a half. And let’s not forget that if anyone has suffered from this situation, it has been SMEs, which in many cases lack the financial muscle that large corporations have to weather the storm. We are talking about a period in which many SMEs have been forced to close down and, therefore, in which any support has been able and can make a difference.

Another particularly interesting data is that, although 78% of companies that rely on cloud software also use software installed on their own systems, there are already 22% that operate exclusively with tools in the cloud. In other words, if the trend continues, we will soon be able to say that one in four companies has already fully transitioned to the cloud.

The pandemic has also had a direct relationship with this circumstance. Why? Why has served to give more visibility to many categories of cloud software that, until now, they did not have so much prestige. And it is that although software in the cloud, as a concept, is known by companies, there is still quite a lack of knowledge about how far the variety of services goes. A quick look at the GetApp cloud management software category shows us the software products that can help us in our day-to-day lives.

The circumstances of the last year and a half have forced, as I said, the adoption of new solutions, with which companies have covered new needs arising from confinements and the hasty deployment of teleworking. The most notable in this regard are those related, in one way or another, to communication, whether internal (communication and collaboration between workers) or external (customer assistance and management).

Regarding the experience after adopting cloud software, two out of every three companies affirm that its implementation was simple or very simple, something that serves to end the unfounded resentment that it is a complicated process. And we must not forget that although for many companies the jump to the cloud is something new, on the other side we find a sector with many years of experience and an enormous degree of maturity, and that thanks to it they can offer implementation experiences and usage highly optimized.

I think it’s important to remember that nothing less than 90% of the companies surveyed by GetApp say that cloud software has improved processes of business. Nine out of ten companies that have made the leap, whether it has been more or less planned, have found a benefit in it.

In response, therefore, to the question with which this publication was opened, las companies seek to simplify and improve their processes, and in exceptional circumstances also a solution for unforeseen problems. And the key is that, as expected but it is always positive to confirm, cloud software is capable of responding to these needs, and of helping SMEs in their day-to-day life.
