The gardai have warned the public of a new style of bank crime that has been picking up traction over the last number of weeks.

“Bank Jugging” is when criminals wait for bank customers to leave a bank with either a bag or envelope that looks like it’s full of cash.

The criminals then break into the person’s car to rob it or even rob it directly from the person.

In a statement, gardai have warned the public about this new method as well as issuing some tips on how best not to fall victim to these methods.

“Bank Jugging occurs when criminals park outside a financial institution and watch patiently as customers go in and out.”

“The thief then targets anybody who comes out with a bank bag, coin box or bank envelope that looks like it may have a large amount of cash in. They then follow the customer and break into their car or steal from the victim directly.”

The following six tips have also been published by gardai in the hope of helping the public avoid falling victim to this new crime.

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially if something seems strange as you enter or leave the bank.
  • Conceal your bank deposit bags, coin boxes or envelopes as you enter and leave the bank.
  • Take your bank bag or envelope with you to your next destination. Don’t hide it in your vehicle.
  • Always vary your routes and times of cash drops and collections.
  • Consider using electronic funds transfer rather than depositing or withdrawing cash.
  • If you feel like you are being followed, call 999 and drive to a Garda station.
