From iOS to iPhone Pro Max, scheme illustrates Apple product names

From Mac to iPods and iPhones, it is undeniable that Apple has managed to make its products recognizable from the names. It is even worth noting how some formulas, such as the “i” prefix, or the “Air” lines —which turned from Macbook Air to AirPods— are part of this identity. With that in mind, data visualization researcher Nicolas Kruchten put together an interesting interactive map showing how Apple combines different elements in its product names.

In the scheme, complete in the image below, it is possible to see from the “i” that is together with “OS” to form the brand’s smartphone system, to how “iPhone” becomes “Pro” and even “Max” —name of the devices most advanced of the brand every year.

Kruchten said he got the idea for the project after reading a biography of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. There is even an interactive version of this scheme that can be accessed here. By clicking on each of the balls, see which one it connects with.

“I love the way Apple names things: FireWire, App Nap, iPhone, iPod, EarPod, AirPod, AirPlay, FairPlay, etc. I decided to visualize various Apple product and feature names as a network to see this reuse in action. names from Apple’s public list of trademarks”, explains the developer.

The design is also valuable for recalling some of the brand’s less talked about products, but which are undeniably Apple, such as the iAd WorkBench to AppleTalk.

And you, did you explore the scheme? Leave your impressions about the names of Apple products!
