My Firefox deletes cookies after every exit, which I would like to turn off. However, the corresponding option “Clear cookies and website data when quitting Firefox” is grayed out in the settings and I cannot deselect it. How can I change the setting?

Firefox behaves a bit complicated and ambiguous here. Above the option should be this message: “If Private Browsing is always used, Firefox will clear cookies and site data on exit.” However, this does not refer to the usual private windows, but means that Firefox currently handles every window as a private one – and therefore always deletes cookies on exit.

So you have to break Firefox’s behavior first and then you can manually delete cookies: In the settings, scroll down to “History”. There are two options: Either the value “never create” is selected for “Firefox will create a chronicle”. Switch to “create” or “create according to user-defined settings”. After a restart, which Firefox requests via a dialog, you can select and deselect the original option.

On the other hand, if “Use custom settings” is already selected (or you are switching to it), make sure that the additional option “Always use private browsing” directly below is not selected. Again, Firefox will require a restart if you uncheck it, after which you can use the original option to delete cookies.
