Fair City boss Brigie De Courcy revealed her excitement as the soap kicks off a new schedule with an extra episode to air every week.

The hit RTE show was placed on hold when the coronavirus first arrived in Ireland last year, with filming being halted for three months due to the lockdown and pandemic restrictions.

After a long hiatus, soap fans rejoiced last August when the Carrigstown crew returned to screens.

Announcing the return of the show at the time, the executive producer revealed they were cutting down from four to three episodes per week on air, but would continue to film four a week, to act as a ‘buffer’ in case of another lockdown.

A year on, De Courcy revealed the soap will return to its pre-pandemic schedule of four episodes per week, from last night.

The soap boss said: “We are very excited, it’s so wonderful to be bringing back four episodes a week to our viewers.

“Since returning to filming last year, everyone has been so safe and so careful.

“We’ve been filming four episodes a week for some time and now we are in a position to increase our output.

“Viewers can expect lots of great stories and drama across the rest of the summer and beyond.”

The executive producer admitted the long hiatus last summer was a learning curve, and told how show bosses were working out a new system to ensure they are never off the air for so long again.

“What we are hoping to do is to get ourselves a buffer,” she explained last year.

“Before now we filmed, we edited, it went into post-production and went out immediately, which is why we didn’t have much in the can waiting, so we actually had to come off air.

“This time what we hope to do is to build ourselves a buffer, so that if something does happen in the autumn, we’ll be able to slow down to two episodes again and then stay on air for longer.”

The return of the fuller schedule comes after Fair City fans missed out on episodes last week because of of the Euro 2020 finals.
