Everyone has a USB cable, but it is still worth taking a look at the range of unusual cables with additional functions such as automatic winding, magnetic connections or an integrated display. Voonze shows which USB cables are practical or just a nice joke.

Whereas the classic USB connection used to be only for computer accessories, the versatile cable has now also become established for many other gadgets. Smartphones and external SSD storage (guide) use the high data rate that USB 3.0 offers. Many other gadgets, such as flashlights (guide) or wireless headphones (theme world) only use the cable to transmit electricity.

As a rule, the required cables have long been available in every household. However, it never hurts to use more than just the standard cables here. In particular, the charging cables included with many gadgets are actually only suitable for charging with little power. For cost reasons, some manufacturers do not use the connection for data transfer at all. Others rely on the cheaper USB 2.0 cables, which are inferior to the USB 3.0 standard in terms of both data rate and current flow. More information on the technical differences can be found in our purchase advice for USB-C cables: Not everyone can do everything .

In this guide, we look at unusual USB cables with very different additional functions. The models shown are less about the actual performance or the different plugs and sockets. As a rule, most cables with plugs can be found in the USB-A, Micro-USB and USB-C variants. Many models are also available with the Lightning connector, which is important for iPhone users, or are equipped with several connector types or adapters.

If you need your cable to charge notebooks, quick-charge smartphones or to transfer large data streams, you should definitely pay attention to the respective cable specifications.

USB cables with an integrated power indicator are still little known and widespread . These cables have a small display or at least an LED display at the end of the cable, which shows the currently transmitted power in watts. As a rule, these cables work with up to 20V at 5A – i.e. 100W. If you need the maximum performance, you have to take a close look here too. Some cables, like Enablink’s $16 USB-A to USB-C cable, can handle a maximum of 6 A or 66 W, which isn’t enough for the MacBook Pro, for example.

In the editorial office we use a number of such cables. These include the USB-C to USB-C model from Mcdodo for 12 euros and the variants from Soopii for 10 euros . The $12 USB-A to USB-C cables from AICase and $7 Soopii also do a good job. All cables work and show performance right after plugging them in. In part, fluctuations are displayed which we cannot understand. But even if you can argue about the usefulness, the cables look extremely stylish and are hardly more expensive than cables without the power display.

USB cables with power indicators have limited value but look extremely cool.

The simple LED display is easy to see even at night, but it looks cheap. In addition, the cable does not have a protective and high-quality fabric sheathing or metal connector housing. In practice, the only difference between the other cables is that Soopii ‘s cable is a bit softer and therefore more flexible. We just like the sheathed cables with the small display better.

Magnetic USB cables (guide) are already much more widespread . These cables typically come with a USB-A connector with a magnetic end. At this end there is a choice of a micro-USB, USB-C or Lightning connector, which is also magnetic. Thanks to the magnetic effect, there is no need to connect them in the classic way, so smartphones, cameras, headphones, VR glasses and other gadgets can be connected to the charger or PC and disconnected again in fractions of a second. This is not only very convenient to use, the cables also protect the sensitive USB ports of the connected hardware.

Magnetic connectors protect the sensitive connector of Oculus Quest 2 or other gadgets.

However, anyone who decides to use magnetic cables should pay close attention to their technical specifications. Not all cables are suitable for fast charging or data transfer. If you need several cables and adapters, you should buy them from the same manufacturer to avoid compatibility problems.

Magnetic USB cables and adapters are available from around 8 euros. Then it is usually about charging cables, which do not allow data transmission. A larger set with a total of six charging cables of different lengths and four adapters each is available from around 17 euros on Amazon.

From our point of view, you should rather invest a little more and buy a cable including a data port. The Cafele model we use privately costs 12 euros in a double pack. The adapters for Lightning, Micro-USB and USB-C are also available individually for this purpose.

If there are already enough cables, retrofitting with a magnetic adapter is also possible. The adapters suitable for USB-C cables are available from Cerrxian for 17 euros or angled from Essager for 18 euros , from Vanpaga from 20 euros or from XtremeMac for 25 euros .

Luminous USB cables are a real eye-catcher and suitable wherever attention is required. The cables gleaming in neon colors are usually designed as charging cables and do not have a data port or fast USB 3.0. Most models allow up to 3 A at 5 V. Of course, this is not enough for notebooks. The cables then indicate whether electricity is flowing with a flashing effect, which is intended to imitate a flowing movement.

Three magnetic USB cables. The variant on the far right is illuminated and shines in bright blue.

In addition to luminous cables with a magnetic end for 6 euros and more, there are also cables with different connectors from around 7 euros . What looks extremely cool on a trade fair stand, in the workshop or in the children’s room is only suitable for everyday use to a limited extent. From our point of view, the conspicuous cables are only suitable to a limited extent for work rooms, living rooms or cars.

We find USB cables with a small LED on the USB plug to be significantly more practical than the illuminated cables. It is definitely easier to find the charging cable behind the couch or on the bedside table. The small LEDs are usually not brilliantly bright and therefore not disturbing. We use such a magnetic cable with a status LED from Melonboy. The cables are available in sets of four from 16 euros , from Soopii in a double pack from 10 euros or individually with high-quality sheathing from 9 euros from Inui .

Anyone who regularly has to stow their cables in a backpack, bag or drawer is constantly bundling them up. If not, cable clutter with knot formation is inevitable. A self-retracting cable promises a remedy here . These cables, which are usually only intended for charging, are housed in a small housing with an integrated winding mechanism. If necessary, the two cable ends can be pulled out and then snap into place at the desired length. Another pull on the cable ends ensures that the cable rolls up again.

The USB cable drums for your pocket are available from around 5 euros with a USB-C connection . Even retractable cables with multiple connectors (Lightning, Micro-USB and USB-C) cost just under 8 euros . The double pack with USB multiple adapter is available for 15 euros from Miger, for example.

Self-rolling cables prevent annoying cable clutter.

As can be clearly seen from the product images on Amazon, there are clear differences in the cable quality between the offers. While many cheap models only appear very thin and not very durable, some cables, such as the model with a multiple plug for 15 euros , make a much more stable impression.

The System-S concept for 9 euros , for example, does not automatically roll up itself, but is at least helpful when it is rolled up . Several magnets are mounted on the cable, which make it easier to roll up and keep the cable in shape without much effort.

Empty reels for neatly rolling up existing cables also do not save on rolling them up. However, such cable winders are still practical if the cables are too long and there is a tangle of cables under the desk . Cable winders are available in sets of three from 10 euros .

An alternative option for compactly stowed away cables are spiral USB cables , as we know them from old telephones. The cables, which are available from about 9 euros, are available with different connector combinations. When pulled together, our Mcdodo cable measures almost 35 to 40 cm . When stretched, the length is around 180 cm.

Since more and more devices rely on power supply via USB, the low-tech gadget USB cable with switch is also interesting. Consumers such as lamps, cameras, Raspberry Pi or even the illuminated mouse pad and the LED keyboard can be quickly and easily disconnected from the power supply or reconnected. Fumbling around with the USB power supply is no longer necessary and annoying continuous lighting is over.

A magnetic USB-C cable, a cable with a power indicator, a coiled cable, a variant with a power switch and a light-up charging cable.

Such USB adapter plugs with switches are available in different versions from about 5 euros. A package with four switches (2x white, 2x black) and a cable length of 33 cm is available from 10 euros. The set of two switches with a 1 meter long cable is available from 12 euros. USB power supplies with a switch on the cable can be found from 10 euros.

If you don’t want to equip every gadget with its own switch, you can also use a USB hub with integrated ON/OFF switches . Such switchable hubs are available from around 10 euros. Here, too, one must urgently pay attention to the specifications!

If you want to extend your USB cable, you should use a cable with an integrated signal amplifier for a length of five meters or more. In the case of transmission without amplification, there is a risk of signal loss, which affects image quality and reliability, for example. When transferring data to a laser engraver or 3D printer, we’ve seen this problem using an extension cable that’s only two meters long. The work process could be started, but after a short time the data transmission broke down and the machines simply stopped.

USB cable: Cables longer than five meters require so-called signal amplifiers. Data throughput and power are still limited.

Five meter USB 2.0 cables with an amplifier are available from around 12 euros. 10 meters cost from 18 euros . With a total length of 20 meters , about 33 euros are due. 30 meter USB 2.0 cables are available from 70 euros. An active USB 3.0 cable with a length of 30 meters costs over 100 euros.

USB cables come in a thousand varieties and you can never have enough! Aside from the fact that micro-USB is becoming increasingly rare, it is generally worth switching to cables with high power and data throughput. However, if you want to stock up on cables, you should always pay close attention to the manufacturer’s specifications so that you don’t experience any surprises after the purchase. We show more about this in the USB-C cable guide: Not everyone can do everything .

Above all, magnetic USB cables (guides) bring real added value . In addition to the more convenient handling, they also relieve the sensitive USB ports. The USB power switches are also practical – if you use appropriate consumers such as effect lamps with USB power supply (guide) .

The cables with integrated power indicator also leave a positive impression. The added value is manageable, but the recognition is high. Disputes about who owns the cable are currently almost impossible.
