The Eve Outdoor Cam surveillance camera records outdoors and illuminates the surroundings. The recordings are stored directly in Apple’s iCloud.
Almost two years after a surveillance camera for indoor use, the Munich-based manufacturer Eve Systems has now launched an outdoor model. The Eve Outdoor Cam, which costs 250 euros, has a robust, black metal housing that is said to be weatherproof with IP55 certification. It is attached to the wall and plugged into a 230 volt connection, for example instead of a lamp. Installation is easily feasible for users with basic electrical knowledge. The camera itself is connected to its 2.4 GHz WLAN.

Outdoor cam with LED spotlight
In addition to a motion detector, the outdoor cam also has an LED spotlight. As soon as the sensor registers movement, she switches on the light and starts recording at the same time. The lamp shines brightly like a spotlight, but can also be dimmed or deactivated via an app. When the light is off, the camera films in black and white. You can intercom via the app via loudspeaker and microphone.
The outdoor cam does not have an internal memory or space for SD cards. The manufacturer also does not maintain its own cloud service. If you want to save videos, you have to take out a paid iCloud subscription (from 99 cents per month) from Apple, which unlocks the “secure HomeKit video” function. The videos then end up encrypted in the iCloud and the user can watch or download them in the Home app for ten days.
iCloud subscription and HomePod for advanced features
You need the iCloud subscription anyway if you want the camera to recognize animals, people, cars and packages. It is also a requirement if you want to set activity zones using the Home app. Since the videos are analyzed locally in the network, a HomePod or an Apple TV is also required.
The camera field of view covers an area of 157 degrees. The Outdoor Cam records videos in Full HD (1080p) at 24 fps. The quality was fine. Live images and videos didn’t look razor-sharp, but enough details could still be seen. It reproduces colors quite naturally, with backlighting the videos tend to be overexposed.
The Outdoor Cam costs a little less than Arlo or Netatmo floodlight cameras. If you have an iCloud subscription, you get a solid surveillance camera with it.
