Endless Dungeon is a mixture of Roguelite and Tower Defense! Preview

Scheduled for release in May of this year, Endless Dungeon is the newest project from Amplitude studio, known for games like Humankind, Endless Legend, Endless Space and Dungeons of the Endless. The title will be published by Sega.

Arriving as the newest chapter in the Endless saga, Endless Dungeon merges much of the studio’s expertise and pre-established concepts into a thrilling space adventure.

TechSmart had the chance to try out the title beforehand and we’ll share our first impressions with you.

The world of Endless Dungeon

Being able to live the adventure alone or with friends in cooperative mode, Endless Dungeon introduces us to a world known as Galaxy, whose main facilities were built by divine creatures known as Endless.

In the plot, we are trapped in one of the space stations built by the Endless and your objective is to reach the ship’s core to escape the alien creatures that have infested the place.

For some reason, the protagonists become “immortal”, but whenever they die, they are taken back to the Saloon, a bar that serves as the central hub for the different stages of the game.

And how does this mix of game styles work?

As we know, Tower Defense style games involve placing traps and other types of defenses to prevent enemies from reaching your character or a place that belongs to you.

In Endless Dungeon this is no different, however, in addition to being able to position your defenses, your character also has his own weapons and skills, which serve to help in combating the hordes of enemies.

Added to this we have the roguelite factor, which similar to games like Hades, makes you lose some of your skills and improvements when being overwhelmed by enemies, being taken back to the beginning of the phase, which in this case is the Saloon.

Even if this style of play can be a natural repellent for some players, since many do not have the patience for this more “punitive” system, I must say that Endless Dungeon’s pleasant gameplay ends up breaking this barrier a little.

Unfortunately, during the preview it wasn’t possible to explore enough of the game to level up my skills enough to be able to explore the stages with stronger enemies, but during the test I could notice a bit of repetition in the gameplay, even if the maps and enemies are fine several.

Another negative factor is that the Tower Defense style gameplay does not stand out so much, with the weapons you place on the map serving only as a backdrop and much of the action being up to the player and his character’s skills. Of course, they help a lot when the horde gets out of control and the volume of enemies is terrifying, but still, I missed a better use of this system.

For those who wonder, the game has a wide variety of characters, which allows for greater diversity in gameplay, as well as in their combat strategies, since each character has a different style. During the game, it is possible to obtain improvements and weapons for your character, which further increases your strategic possibilities.

Endless Dungeon’s strongest points

In my opinion, Endless Dungeon’s strongest points were the game’s art style and soundtrack, which are very enjoyable indeed.

In the artistic part, amplitude opts for graphics that look a lot like the comic book style of Spider-Man in the Spider-Verse, with cartoonish characters and bolder and more colorful textures.

As for the soundtrack, much of the game’s personality is conveyed by it, whether during the tense and dark stages, full of enemies walking around the map or even in the Saloon, where we have a band that can be enjoyed with peace of mind while you have a drink .

our partial verdict

It’s still early to set a verdict for Endless Dungeon, even more so because the developers must make adjustments and changes until launch, mainly in terms of connectivity and communication in multiplayer. Anyway, from what you can see so far, we had a positive balance.

The game’s performance is quite acceptable and you can see that it won’t be too demanding, even on less powerful hardware like the Nintendo Switch, which is great.

Even with the repetition factor, it’s clear that Amplitude knows what it’s doing and has employed all its expertise from previous games in the new title. If you’re a fan of the studio’s work, the new release is certainly worth the wait.

This seems to be another one of those good games to spend time with friends and have a few laughs, which brings a certain lightness to the frustration caused by roguelites.

Endless Dungeon will launch for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

*We’d like to thank Sega and TheoGames for the test drive opportunity.
