Microsoft’s web browser in its Android version continues to improve. Recently, Microsoft’s artificial intelligence, Copilot, was updated with more features, including the ability to analyze and generate images directly in the Android version. Now, the mobile browser is preparing to take another important leap.

And Edge for Android will have support for extensions, in the same way as its desktop version. The Microsoft browser will thus join Firefox with support for extensions in its mobile version, something that not even Chrome currently offers.

Microsoft Edge will also overtake Chrome by including extensions in its Android version

Support for extensions in Edge for Android has been discovered by an X (Twitter) user known as @Leopeva64who shared screenshots of his discovery on the social network.

For now, support for extensions is only available.Available for the development version of Edge for Androidspecifically, for Edge Canary, which is available on the Google Play Store.

When installing the browser, it is possible to activate support for extensions from a secret menu by following the steps below:

  • Access Edge Canary (starting with version 123)
  • In the address bar, type edge://flags and press “Go”
  • In the search bar, type “Extensions” and activate the option “Android Extension
  • Restart the browser to apply the changes

Thus I was able to activate the experimental function of the Extensions in Edge Canary version, although I could not access them. Edge’s address list already includes two pages dedicated to extensions, although they are still inactive.

It is important to keep two things in mind: first, this and all the options available in the edge://flags menu are experimental features that may affect the way the browser works (Edge Canary itself is a development version, so its operation is not stable).

Secondly, even if extension support is enabled from the experimental features menu, This does not mean that the extensions are already available for all. In my case, by activating the option I was unable to access the extensions, while the user @Leopeva64 gained access to a new button for Extensions in the Edge settings menu, which does not appear in my browser.

From this button you can access the list of available extensions, which currently include uBlock Origin, Dark Reader and Global Speed.

The news of this development version of Edge is expected to reach all users in the month of March. However, it is not yet confirmed that the extensions will debut in the Android browser that same month, although the presence of these advances in the Canary version ensures that they will be available sooner rather than later. Firefox recently released support for more than 400 extensions in its Android version. Will Chrome join this trend?
