Dune: Awakening brings the MMO to Arrakis

Brian Adam

There is no better setting for a survival MMO than Arrakis. That’s how they must have thought of it funcom that yesterday, during the Gamescom Opening Night Live, they announced Dune: Awakening which is preparing its beta and will come to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

Along with Legendary Pictures, the title will follow the aesthetic seen in the recent Dune by Denis Villenueve, yes, Timothée Chalamet did not appear in the trailer. Dune: Awakening will put an emphasis on surviving on the arid planet, exploring it and trying to get ahead. We will be able to build our small home and evolve it until we have a powerful base, collect spice with our harvester and try to improve our position within the Landsraad. All this while we fight with our rivals and avoid being devoured by a sandworm.

As an approach it looks very good and Funcom has experience in managing massive online worlds, see Conan Exiles either The Secret World. We need to see some gameplay to get rid of doubts and be able to get excited about being able to survive the dangerous Arrakis.
