The original Double Dragon pioneered co-op beat-em-up play in 1987, and now, players will get a nostalgic new dose of action and brawling with the newest chapter in the series.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will be released this spring for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.

The trailer suggests that the new game will be a return to the classic formula that enshrined the franchise. There are retro pixelated graphics, 13 new characters and, of course, local co-op for two players. In the news, there is the possibility of using two characters at once, switching between them whenever you want.

Developer Modus Games also hinted at the presence of some roguelite elements, such as dynamic mission selection that will modify the level size, number of enemies, and difficulty. Additionally, players will encounter light RPG mechanics, possibly in skill progression.

In the plot, the protagonists Jimmy and Billy Lee find the city of New York devastated by a nuclear war and taken over by gangs. The solution that the brothers find is to go hand in hand with the miscreants to clean up the streets and bring peace to the chaotic scene.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the is the first game in the series since Double Dragon IV from Arc System Works in 2017. Although developer Modus Games is not as well known, it is responsible for acclaimed indies like Afterimage and Teslagrad 2.
