Does Xiaomi Run Out Of Android Like Huawei?

Donald Trump faces his last days in the White House, but that does not mean that he is going to say goodbye cordially and without making important decisions. The relationship with China has been quite deteriorated for months and now a new list of companies that will be blocked by the United States has just been published. Among them, the mobile phone giant Xiaomi that joins Huawei in this veto for ties with the Chinese army. The big question of the moment is: will Xiaomi be left without Android like Huawei?

The decision of the Trump administration to add Huawei to a blacklist that prevented it from any type of relationship with American companies is still waiting. This has led to the fact that the company’s latest mobiles have been launched without Android, at least without “the Android” that we know with Google services. Since then, the Chinese giant’s sales have plummeted and, in Spain, it has gone from leading the market to occupying a minority position.

Not the same blacklist as Huawei

Given the confusion generated by the news published by Reuters, we have to clarify that there are several “black lists” in the United States for the relationship of their companies or their investors with other foreign companies. In the case of Huawei, it was placed on a blacklist of companies with ties to the Chinese government, preventing it from using the technology of North American companies.

The list to which Xiaomi has been added, which also includes Huawei for other reasons, is related to companies with ties to the Chinese military and which are “too close to pose a potential threat to the United States.” This list was created in 1999, although it has never carried much weight until the arrival of Trump.

At practical levels, it implies that the prohibition of investing in the companies of this black list by the investors of the United States. It must be made clear that, since the list is not linked to the government, Xiaomi may continue to maintain relations with American companies, using its technology, etc.

However, it does pose a problem for Xiaomi as all US investors will have to dispose of their stakes in the company by November 11, 2021. The share price will plummet in the next few days, causing the capitalization of the company to fall, although we do not know to what level.

Donald Trump will still be president of the United States for a few more days, so we can still expect some final surprise. Joe Biden could revoke this order, although we do not believe it is one of the first decisions he makes upon landing in the White House.
