Do not expect to see a Samsung roll-up smartphone: They do not see it clearly

At CES 2022, Samsung showcased display technologies beyond the foldable phones it already makes. One of the concepts presented was the Flex Slidable, in which the screen unfolds to expand the existing size, as in the OPPO X 2021 and the canceled LG Rollable. However, Samsung is not interested in making slider or rollable phones, says Yi Choong-hoon, CEO of UBI Research. Samsung isn’t interested in rollable technology and will instead focus on what it does best: foldable devices. This means investing resources and R&D in making foldable devices better year after year.

OPPO X 2021 The analyst points out, in addition to a lukewarm market, certain limitations that roll-up phones have compared to folding ones. The aforementioned limitations of slider screens have to do with the colorless polyamide film, which protects the slider screen at the top. Apparently it can affect the quality of the screen surface. Also, it seems that the usual phone digitizers can’t work on the rollable devices. “For consumers familiar with flip phones, swiping the screen may seem more complicated,” Yi adds. “For the same reason, the slider screen is unlikely to be used for laptops. But for tablets, the barrier to entry seems lower than for other devices.” Last month at Lenovo Tech World 2022, Motorola’s rollable phone was shown alongside a laptop, which also features a slide-out screen. In both cases, the roll-up screen extends vertically instead of oriented horizontally. “Chinese smartphone makers may try to launch slider phones in an attempt to differentiate themselves from Samsung. But the market potential seems limited,” Yi concludes.
