Irish-medium education is particularly disappointed at the decision not to award any capital grant to any Derry school, says a Northern Ireland Assemblymember.

Education Minister Peter Weir announced funding of £ 156 million for schools in Northern Ireland this week, but there were no schools in Derry on the list.

Karen Mullan, MLA and Sinn Féin education spokeswoman, said it was a shame that Derry’s all-Irish schools are not provided with extra money, especially when they are in desperate need of investment.

“It is good news for the schools that have been successful in receiving grants, but many in my own city will be disappointed at the decision, especially the Irish-medium education sector,” said Mullan.

“We have had three schools in the city operating through Irish and already located in temporary buildings for the last 15-30 years.”

She invited the Minister for Education to visit the schools to discuss their challenges.

Minister Weir said that he understood that schools that missed out on the grants would be disappointed but that he was happy to meet with Irish-medium education to discuss the matter and explore whether a solution could be reached.
