Many will say an award like a Golden Globe was a long time coming for Saoirse Ronan and last night she was finally awarded for all her work in Lady Bird.
It wasn’t just Saoirse who was smiling at the Golden Globe awards in Beverly Hills as we had another Irish winner in Martin McDonagh as writer-director of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Ronan, who was previously nominated for Golden Globes for her roles in Brooklyn and Atonement, won the Best Actress – Musical or Comedy award for her performance in writer-director Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age story. Lady Bird was also named Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the awards.
Nominated in six categories, Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was the biggest film winner on the night, winning four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Accepting her Best Actress – Musical or Comedy award, Saoirse said;
“My mam’s on FaceTime over there on someone’s phone right now so hi!”
While also accepting his award Martin spoke of his mam;
“It’s my mum’s birthday tomorrow; she likes this kind of thing, so happy birthday, mum – even though I think she wanted Lady Bird to win!”
