DeepMind, Google's sister company, intends to launch artificial intelligence competing with ChatGPT

Demis Hassabis, Executive Director of DeepMind, revealed its plans to design an artificial intelligence chatbot to compete with ChatGPT in a recent interview with TEAM. The British company aims to create an app that rivals OpenAI’s solution, which has garnered worldwide attention and received mixed reviews for security.

The project is called “Sparrow” and should enter the private testing phase in 2023. DeepMind — a company that belongs to the same group that owns Google, Alphabet — claims that the tool will perform searches on the web and display results in the form of “chat” with natural language in a similar way to ChatGPT, but with several improved functions.

One of the functions promised with Sparrow that ChatGPT lacks is the ability to cite sources used to perform a search through reinforcement learning. In addition, DeepMind will utilize all of its expertise in the field of artificial intelligence obtained from Google to create a more comprehensive, intelligent and secure application.

Hassabis used his interview to raise concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence, which, while it can bring great advances to different sectors, can also have its purpose distorted. We recently reported reports that ChatGPT is used by hackers to produce malware much faster.

There are also ethical issues that could put the future of artificial intelligence on a tricky horizon. “AI-powered dialog agents may express false or inaccurate information, use discriminatory language, or encourage unsafe behavior,” according to DeepMind.

In the demo below, a user asks the artificial intelligence to teach him how to hotwire a car. Sparrow refuses to comply with the request and says: “I was trained not to give advice that could lead to breaking the law.”

With Sparrow, the expectation is that artificial intelligence will be used by everyone in an ethical and safe way. This clearly means that DeepMind’s platform will be much more filtered than ChatGPT. According to the company, there is an internal ethics council that will discuss the risks offered by the machine under development.

Microsoft is one of the biggest investors in OpenAI, and intends to integrate features of the GPT system in applications such as Bing, Word and Outlook. In response to speculation that this technology would eventually replace Google, Alphabet is expected to start testing Sparrow in mid-2023, without revealing dates and great details about the project.
