One of Chrome’s experiments is ideal for opera lovers, as it allows us to create a melody just by using the mouse and a web browser.

It is about Blob Opera, and the result is what you see in this video:

We just have to raise and lower each voice (from lowest to highest) for the singer to sing the tones. If we move from right to left, it will change the vowel, so the combinations are endless.

It was launched by Google in 2021 thanks to a partnership between artist David Li and Google Arts & Culture.

Prior to the initial launch of the experiment, in December 2020, they recruited four talented freelance opera singers who offered a wide range of sounds. They explained it to the singers as if they were teaching a computer to sing.

We fed 16 hours of singing into a convolutional neural network, which learned to play each type of voice based on what it heard. In fact, the team created two models: one that taught the computer to sing, and another that taught it to harmonize.

Blob Opera is thus a fun machine learning experiment that plays with music, showing how computers can model human singing.

The experiment has been used in many contexts, from teachers in the classroom to professional artists and creative hobbyists.
