Completely discarded the new volume button of the iPhone 15 Pro

Important news has been known about the phones that Apple will present this year. In a letter to shareholders, Apple provider Cirrus Logic has confirmed – in a less than direct way – that iPhone 15 Pro models will finally not feature solid-state volume buttons.

In the letter that has been published things are pretty clear: “Among the HPMS opportunities we’ve discussed, a new product that we mentioned in previous letters to shareholders that was scheduled for introduction this fall is no longer expected to go to market as planned. Since we have visibility limited about our customers’ future plans for this product at this time, we are removing the revenue associated with this component from our internal model.” And, due to the client portfolio that the provider has, everything indicates that it is something from Apple.

The end of a good Apple idea… for now

HPMS refers to Cirrus Logic’s high-performance mixed-signal chips, which include haptic controllers for the engine that had to be used in the new iPhone Pro. In a letter to shareholders last November, the Texas-based company said it had continued to “work with a strategic customer” and hoped to “launch a new HPMS component in smartphones next year.” Apple is Cirrus Logic’s largest customer, accounting for 79% of their revenue, which makes it quite apparent what’s going on.

Therefore, the comments above from Cirrus Logic probably refer to the solid-state buttons, which were one of the expected novelties that were to come in the iPhone 15 Pro. And, it seems, this will not be the case in this generation and we will have to focus on other possibilities such as USB type C connectivity and the change of element for the Mute. In this way, the initial forecasts regarding the use of two additional taptic engines that will provide haptic feedback when the solid-state buttons are pressed, come to nothing.

Everything more traditional in the new iPhone 15 Pro

Things, therefore, have been changing with respect to the new option we are talking about and, always, it has been indicated that everything It happens because of unresolved technical problems before mass production. Consequently, the new Apple smartphones will have traditional buttons and only the ring/silent button (which could be customizable like the action button on the Apple Watch Ultra) will be changed.

there will be wait for the iPhone 16 to enjoy solid-state buttons probably, but Cirrus Logic’s comments in the published letter indicate that the vendor is not yet aware of these plans.
