Compensate for greenhouse gases: A comparison of providers for CO₂ offsetting

For many, flying is part of the holiday, but it promotes climate change – as does daily energy consumption. However, emissions can be offset later.

Whether it’s a flight, road trip or cruise – if you want to travel to distant places, you will inevitably encounter CO on the way by plane, car or ship2 out. If you don’t want to miss out on vacation and you can’t find a comparable travel option that causes fewer greenhouse gases, CO2-Compensation platforms to calm your own conscience a little. If you want, you can also offset your carbon dioxide emissions through electricity consumption and heating.

We looked at the portals of the five providers Atmosfair, Climate Fair, Klima-Kollekte, Myclimate and Primaklima. There, users can, for example, calculate their CO caused by traffic2-Calculate emissions and use this to compensate for the gases that are harmful to the climate. The providers sometimes differ significantly in terms of which projects they support with the funds in order to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of the users. For example, Atmosfair invests in the expansion of renewable energies in the southern hemisphere, while Primaklima protects and reforests forests worldwide.

The CO2However, compensation does not lead to a climate-neutral life – all providers emphasize this on their websites. If you want to make an active contribution to climate protection here, you should generally reduce the emission of climate-damaging gases through travel and car journeys instead of compensating for them afterwards. Nevertheless, the funded projects help to ensure that less carbon dioxide pollutes the environment in the future, for example because climate-damaging power plants are replaced and greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere are bound again.
