Marron Estates has withdrawn its appeal to An Bord Pleanala for the development of its site on The Cobblestone Pub.

It lodged the appeal in the hopes of getting permission for a 114 room hotel in Smithfield.

Last November, planning permission for a 114-bedroom hotel on the site was rejected after a campaign to save the historic Smithfield music venue.

Hundreds of objections to the plans had been lodged from all over the world and a ceili was held on O’Connell Street in a bid to #SavetheCobblestone

Customers and staff alike celebrated the win with Dublin City Council drawing attention to the cultural significance of the famous pub.

Marron Estates had appealed DCC’s decision to refuse planning permission on the Cobblestone site.

A decision on the appeal was due on 4 May before the developers changed their minds.

The pub had also organised a ‘Last Waltz’ event, fearing that the appeal would signal the end of the iconic music venue.

Thankfully, the Deputy Lord of Dublin tweeted today that Marron estates had withdrawn their appeal.

Joe Costello tweeted: “Good news in this morning’s post!

“The appeal to @anbordpleanala against @DubCityCouncil decision to Refuse Permission for hotel at @CobblestoneDub has been withdrawn. Well done to all involved in the campaign We need to protect & nurture our City’s cultural spaces #PeoplePower.”

Supporters of the campaign to save the landmark pub were delighted to hear the news.

One person said: “Celebrate indeed. Wish there was a way to historically preserve this site and safeguard it from future developing plans.”

Another wrote: “Fantastic news!! Such a gem of a place.”

A third commented: “Mighty news! Long live the Cobblestone.”
