An 18-year-old Clondalkin man is the newest breakout star in the Dublin music scene after penning a record deal with a major label.

William Powell recently signed with music label Ministry of Sound and his debut song ‘Love you’ is being released tomorrow.

Powell has been on the Dublin scene for a few years but only recently started working on his own music.

He started out DJing as a youngster and is now producing his own work.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Powell described his journey to getting signed with a music label.

He said: “It all started when I was in fourth year in school and one of my friends got a set of decks and he was showing me and I became hooked. I just wanted to get my own set.”

Powell worked in multiple clubs and events as a DJ but always craved more out of his music career.

“I always thought it would be great if I was DJing and the crowd was singing along to my own songs,” he said.

When lockdown hit the teenager found himself with more spare time on his hands, so he started on his journey of creating his own music.

But he had no idea how big of a reaction he would get when he posted a preview of his song on social media.

“I just thought I´d make a song, post it to SoundCloud and YouTube and get a couple of views and that would be it,” he said.

“But when a label actually came on and wanted to sign a track it was surreal.

“To be honest I thought it was all fake. I didn’t think it was real

“I told myself this was my chance, this was my shot, so I may as well grab it and run with it.”

The teenager says this is only the start of his journey in music and there’s a lot more he wants to do and learn.

“You can never stop learning in producing,” he said.

“There´s always something new to learn but at the moment I’m quite happy with how it´s going especially with the track that´s coming out tomorrow with Ministry of Sound.”

The track was created by Powell with Leeds teenager Josh Long.

He describes it as “house and dance pop”.

But the track that’s being released tomorrow isn’t the only thing that the youngster has been working on.

“I´ve loads of stuff on my laptop,” he said.

“I have another track I’m working on at the moment, I´m just plugging away at it.”

Powell is a Leaving Cert student but has opted for predicted grades so he is not sitting his exams.

And he can’t believe what is happening to him at such a young age.

“I´m just eighteen years old, I’m quite new to this,” he said.

“I´ve never had the experience to work with a label, so it’s been mad.

“For me this is the dream.”

Powell is delighted with the hype the track has received from his local area in Clondalkin and has had DJs from Dublin and all over Ireland supporting him.

He wants to give a shout-out to Aaron Courtney, Eoin Kavanagh, Stevie Mac and Aaron O´Connor for helping him get to this point in his career.
