Google ChromeOS received an update to its beta version that adds system-wide privacy options to enable and disable access to a Chromebook’s camera and microphone, following the trend set in motion by Android.
in the section Settings under Security & Privacy > Privacy Controls, there will be “Camera Access” and “Microphone Access”, with ChromeOS giving details like Front Camera and Internal Microphone. This determines “access to apps and websites with camera permission [ou microfone]”.
If the user leaves these controls disabled, he will always receive the notification “Enable microphone access? — This allows microphone access to all apps and websites with microphone permission.” Thus, the user can tap button to unlock quickly.
Camera and microphone access should officially roll out to Chromebooks by the end of the year. Google will elevate these toggles to Quick Settings, just like in Android 12.
Google has also made other Chromebook security announcements aimed at corporate environments. ChromeOS Data Controls allow administrators to prevent copy/paste, screenshots, video recordings, screen sharing and printing. This is now available to the general public.
