After completing construction of a molten salt thorium nuclear reactor this summer, China is already reportedly integrating the technology into a large container ship, according to the South China Morning Post . If this ship actually sees the light of day, it could greatly reduce pollution caused by maritime transport.

A shipyard in China has just revealed plans for a gigantic -containers that would rival the largest in the world. Unveiled by the South China Morning Post , the ship, named KUN-24AP, would have a capacity of around 24,000 containers, and would be in in Jiangnan. Its particularity is to use a nuclear reactorwith molten salts.

The media announced this summer that China had started up its first molten salt thorium nuclear reactor in thefrom Gobi. China is the first country to build a thorium reactor outside the experimental framework. Thorium is much more abundant than , and China would have significant reserves, enough to supply the country for 20,000 years.

A “zero-emission” container ship

Thorium is a gray discovered in 1829 and named after the Norse god of . Molten salt thorium reactors would be more compact, produce much less, would not require large quantities of water for cooling and the electricity produced would be much cheaper. Still according to the South China Morning Post , this ship could represent a “zero” alternative.  » to today’s large, highly polluting container ships .

It remains to be seen whether China is really capable of building a ship equipped with a thorium reactor. In any case, few details are available. Research on the thorium reactor is classified, probably because of military.
