can you create a decent graphics card in 18 months? That is precisely what the Chinese company Moore Threads has achieved, which was created in October 2020 and promised to offer the first fully developed and created GPU there in a few months.

Today the company already has that graphics card: it’s called MTT S60 and it offers a power that seems to be comparable to that of the RTX 2060 that NVIDIA presented in September 2018. It may not be a revolutionary graphics card, but the achievement is undoubtedly remarkable.

Modest, but still interesting

The founder of Moore Threads is Zhang Jianzhong, who was previously Global Vice President of NVIDIA and General Manager of the company in China: that track record makes it clear that started with a strong base that has allowed him to carry out this singular mission.

The demo of League of Legends in 1080p did not make things very clear, and we will have to wait for the final release of this graphic to evaluate its performance in video games.

It has done it with graphics cards that are certainly not the most advanced on the market, but they may not need it. Its GPUs make use of so-called MUSA cores with Sudi architecture, and are manufactured with 12 nm photolithographysomething that is already a handicap considering that NVIDIA and AMD use 8 and 7 nm photolithographs respectively in their latest generations.

Even so, the MTT S60 promises 6 TFLOPS of performance, a figure that is approximately they throw the RTX 2060 or the GTX 1070. Here we will have to see the real behavior of these graphics in video games. The graphics card is accompanied by 8 GB of LPGDDR4X memory.

In the presentation, only a demo of League of Legends could be seen running in 1080p, although the FPS rate was not disclosed to which I managed to move it or the level of graphic detail with which that demo was run. Several demos were also made with applications that took advantage of its artificial intelligence functions, such as the acceleration of audio, video or natural language processing.

Moore Threads also presented the MTT S2000, a graphic oriented to servers with a power of 12 TFLOPS and 12 GB of memory. The prices or definitive launch dates of these models are unknown, but it will be necessary to see then what the real behavior of some graphics cards is that they may end up being an interesting alternative for those who do not want (or cannot) access the latest from NVIDIA, AMD …or Intel.
