Apple will present RealityOS, its operating system for virtual and augmented reality, according to reports

After a series of rumours, dragged on for years, more concrete indications are finally appearing, but not yet official, about the steps that Apple wants to take in the world of virtual and augmented reality.

According to a recent intellectual property registry, the company could soon make its foray into this area official with the launch of RealityOS, its new operating system.

Rumor about Apple’s virtual and augmented reality headset gains strength

Confirming rumors that have been strengthened by finding the name “RealityOS” in the Apple software code, new information recently reported presents us with a closer look at what the company led by Tim Cook is preparing to fully enter this market.

deepening a tracing made since 2017 to this project, from Bloomberg pointed out that the rumored new Apple augmented and virtual reality headsets could be launched on the market during 2023, postponing a premiere initially scheduled for the end of this year, due to challenges arising around the development of its software.

Although at the moment there is no official announcement that ratifies this project, a valuable precedent has come to support the theories subscribed to by the specialized press: The registration of the RealityOS brand. This process was not carried out directly by Apple Inc, but by Realityo Systems LLC, registered in the state of Delaware.

According to explained on Twitter Parker Ortolani, manager of consumer products for The Verge, Realityo Systems does not appear to have a public presence, suggesting it is a shell company used by Apple to hide its involvement. According to 9to5MacApple has adopted the same strategy in the past, using a shell company called “Yosemite Research LLC” to trademark macOS update names such as Yosemite, Big Sur, and Monterey.

In line with expectations, the trademark documentation refers to the “laptop hardware” in which the system would be executed, also pointing out that it is related to the “design and development of computer and video hardware, software, peripherals and games”.

For those who have followed the trail of this rumor, it was previously reported that earlier this month Apple’s board of directors allegedly tested the wearable device with which RealityOS would debut, which is common practice before a public launch.

Another element that makes this rumor even stronger is that this year’s WWDC is coming up. The annual event for Apple developers will take place on June 6, a date aligned with the aforementioned trademark registration deadlines. We will have to wait until then to confirm the speculations and to know, officially, what this launch will consist of.
