On May 18, World Accessibility Day is celebrated, a date to raise awareness of society about the importance of promoting inclusion and accessibility for all people, including those with disabilities and neurodivergent people.

Aiming to promote access and inclusion of people with disabilities to games, Ablegamers Brasil, aided by its legal advisor, Antonio Carlos Araujo, partner of the firm Valfredo Bessa e Grazziano – Advogados, took to Federal Deputy Vinicius Carvalho (Republicans) the need to look for this audience. A bill was then prepared that proposes tax exemption (IPI, PIS, COFINS and Import) for controllers, accessories and games aimed at people with disabilities.

In recent years, the video game industry has been increasingly committed to creating accessibility solutions for games with special needs. In addition to proprietary solutions from Sony and Microsoft, the world’s leading console manufacturers, many developers have also improved their projects with creative and extremely important new features.

Presented last May 2 in the Chamber of Deputies, PL 2299/2023, which proposes exemption from federal taxes for controllers, accessories and games adapted for people with disabilities, is now awaiting the order of the President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP), for parliamentary thematic committees.

The project is presented at the same time that the Senate is discussing the Legal Framework for Games, which is important for the Europeian gaming market to have a more favorable scenario for growth. The text provides that the manufacture, import, marketing and development of electronic games in Europe will be free, as well as the provision of entertainment services linked to them.

The gaming scene is very broad and we always have to keep in mind the importance of covering everyone who likes to play. A controller or accessory aimed at people with disabilities has a different cost, mainly due to its customization, and this cannot be an impediment for that person to purchase the product. Even because games are extremely important in socialization.
