For the tenth anniversary of its smartwatch, Apple would have in store a restructuring of the range. This was reported by Omdia analysts. And no, there won’t be another new model, there simply will be consistent upgrades for existing lines. This year the Apple Watch Series 9 will arrive, the “standard” model of 2024 according to analysts it could be called the Apple Watch Series X like the iPhone of 2017. First things first.

APPLE WATCH ULTRA 2, MICRO LED ALREADY IN 2024

First of all, this year Apple Watch Ultra should not get news, for the most expensive model in the range an update would be expected every two years. WatchUltra 2 will therefore arrive in 2024, with a larger display (2.13 inches rather than 1.99) and which will switch from the current OLED LTPO technology to micro LED already used for example for the screen of the latest iPad Pro. Among the advantages on a very small device like Apple Watch, greater resistance to chemical wear, lower energy consumption (and therefore greater autonomy) and better visibility in sunlight.

Summing up:

  • display: from the current 1.99 inches to 2.13
  • Pixel Density: Unchanged at 325 ppi
  • technology: from LTPO OLEDs to micro LEDs
  • manufacturer: again LG Display.

Analysts predict that the list price, prohibitive, of Apple Watch Ultra will go up againreaching the levels of the Apple Watch Hermès that currently costs 1,500 euros. The leap would be mainly due to the adoption of the micro LED display, which according to estimates will cost 3 times the OLED of the current Ultra (115 dollars instead of 38).

An increasing number of insiders suggest, the latest rumor is today, a switch to micro LED in 2025, in Omdia they think differently.

APPLE WATCH SERIES X, ENOUGH MORE ABUNDANT DISPLAY

Apple Watch Series 9 will arrive this year, but the structure and display will remain the current ones. In 2024, for the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch, what is currently known as the Apple Watch Series X is expected. The case will once again be declined in two sizes, both however with larger dimensions than the current ones:

  • display:
    • Series 8 and Series 9: 1.71 or 1.92 inches
    • Series X: 1.89 or 2.04 inches
  • Pixel Density: Unchanged at 325/326 ppi
  • technology: once again OLED LTPO
  • manufacturer: again LG Display.
APPLE WATCH SE 3 IN 2024, NO UPDATES THIS YEAR

An update every two years like Ultra also for Apple Watch SE, which arrived in 2020 and was first revised in September last year. One should continue at this rate until 2024, when the third generation will arrive which will once again maintain different display sizes compared to the rest of the range. So if Series X will have a larger screen than Series 9, Watch SE 3 will have the diagonal of the “standard” Watch of the year before, still a step forward for the SE range:

  • display:
    • SE 2: 1.57 or 1.78 inches
    • SE 3: 1.71 or 1.93 inches
  • Pixel Density: Unchanged at 325/326 ppi
  • technology: once again OLED LTPO
  • manufacturer: from the division of the current units between LG Display and Japan Display (JDI) the latter, according to analysts, will be the sole supplier.
