The iPhone 12 has helped Apple overtake Samsung in the fourth quarter of last year, according to data shared by Gartner, with about 80 million iPhones sold worldwide. Apple achieved a market share of 20.8% during the last quarter and an increase of 14.9 percent over the same quarter of the previous year. Samsung came in second with 62.1 million phones and a market share of 16.2%, although South Koreans fell 11.8 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. Xiaomi was third in the table with 43.4 million phones sold and an 11.3% share, which this time represents a growth of no less than 33.9 percent. Huawei’s sales plummeted during the quarter, from 58.3 million units to 34.3 million units. Huawei was left with a market share of just 8.9% in the fourth quarter of 2020, a significant drop from 14.3% the previous year.

Gartner says the market as a whole declined 5.4 percent, with sales of 384.6 million units. “Sales of more 5G smartphones and low to mid-range smartphones minimized the market downturn in Q4 2020,” said Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner. “While consumers remained cautious on their spending and withheld some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and the ‘pro’ features of cameras encouraged some end users to buy new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter.” In terms of global sales for the year, Samsung was the leader in 2020 with 253 million units sold and 18.8%, followed by Apple with 199.8 million units and a 14.8% share. Despite disappointing fourth-quarter results, Huawei remains the third-largest phone maker in 2020, with total sales of 182.6 million units and a market share of 13.5 percent.
