With the launch of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus (here our review), Apple has adopted a very different strategy than usual with regard to the approach to internal design of smartphones. In fact, unlike the two Pro models, the basic variants of this generation have some features that have made them particularly appreciated by iFixit and beyond, given that many sites and reviewers have exalted their repairability qualities.
Apple has intervened again on the matter in the last few hours, during an interview released by Richard Dinh – senior director of iPhone Product Design – at The Sydney Morning Herald, where the issue of reparability was addressed and gods secrets behind this choice.
The key novelty of the iPhone 14 concerns the return to the possibility of open iPhones even from behind, going to remove the rear glass panel, just like on the iPhone 4S. This has brought down repair costs as it is now easier to access all components and even replacing the rear glass is easier than ever.
According to Dinh, this design also brings with it other advantages, including better internal heat dissipation to the smartphone, given that the new surface allows it to be dispersed more evenly, as well as improving its reparability. On the other hand, Apple has also launched a home repair program that allows users to carry out simple repairs on their own, so even the design of smartphones has taken this aspect into account.
Dinh also commented on Apple’s approach to the subject of basic iPhone design, noting that the company does not follow a set script, which is why it is not possible for users to correctly anticipate all its moves. Sometimes Apple looks to the design of previous generation Pro models for inspiration for later base models, while other times try completely different ways.
In the case of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus it has taken the second route, since the Pro models continue to present the classic design that does not simplify the repair. Maybe it will be for the next generation.
