In various user forums, owners of the Apple Studio Display report electrical interference that causes background noise. Is it the shield?

Owners of Apple’s Studio Display, which came onto the market in the spring, complain about noise that appears to be caused by electrical interference from other devices. There are several lengthy threads on platforms such as Reddit and other reports on Apple’s official support forum. Currently they mostly come from the United States of America.

The user reports are reminiscent of a similar problem with the Mac Studio, which was presented at the same time as the Studio Display. In certain work situations, there were high-frequency beeping and buzzing noises. These were more annoying than the (actually quiet) fan noise of the workstation and possibly came from the power supply unit – the Mac Studio with the M1 Max chip was particularly affected, but by far not all models.

The Studio Display, on the other hand, seems to have problems with shielding. According to the thread in the official Apple forum, interference from the house electrical system was detected. Sometimes a dimmer interspersed, sometimes an air conditioner. Apparently, the integrated power supply causes an unwanted amplification of the noises, which are described as high-frequency “buzzing”. Apple’s support hasn’t helped so far, it can only exchange devices, although it happens that the problem also occurs with the replacement device.

Apple’s Studio Display was introduced in March 2022. The 27-inch model comes with 5K, the panel is said to come from the Intel iMac with 5K. The price is at least 1750 euros, but nano-textured glass and/or a special stand can make it significantly more expensive. Mini-LED technology is missing, but there is a not entirely uncontroversial 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle webcam.

Studio display hardware has long been difficult or delayed to purchase, but Apple stores currently have inventory. Apple recently had to fix sound problems with a firmware update that were independent of the current reports. However, a studio display in the editorial office did not show the interference – while the high-frequency interference mentioned could be reproduced in a Mac studio.
