Apple stopped using fingerprint as biometrics in its main line of cell phones in favor of Face ID in 2017, and currently, the only model that still has the technology is the iPhone SE. Much is said about a “triumphal return” of Touch ID, and this Tuesday (14), new rumors indicate that big tech will offer this feature again in its main products in the future with even more functions.

According to a report released by Naver, Apple will follow a schedule to reinvent the form of authentication on the iPhone. Face ID, for example, should start to be hidden under the screen in mid-2025. After about three years, in 2028, the Touch ID would make its return to cell phones with unprecedented health monitoring functions.

Touch ID is currently limited to recognizing the user’s fingerprint and performing authentication to unlock the phone or access a protected application. In the future, the sensor would be integrated into the screen and would support panel-wide biometric recognitionso it would not be necessary to place your finger on a defined area on the display.

For this, Apple would use optical and infrared technologies already protected by patents to allow the touch-sensitive area to identify biometric data. These components would also allow the US manufacturer to implement health measurement functions that would dispense with the use of the Apple Watch.

Such functions would include heart rate and oxygen saturation monitoring — all at your fingertip. Integrated health measurement technologies are features seen in several cell phones from past generations, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus, launched with a heart rate sensor next to the camera module in 2019.

Samsung discontinued these technologies in later generations of its top-of-the-line phones, but with the constant evolution of biometric sensors, it is possible that the feature will return to the mainstream. flagships of the brand to compete with future iPhone models.
