In addition to selling iPhones at Apple they are planning rent them. It would be that users subscribe to a new monthly subscription service that would transform the iPhone into a service instead of a product and, in practice, would facilitate brand new iPhone every year when the new model is introduced.

The iPhone monthly subscription service would be similar to renting

This has been explained by Mark Gurman, a renowned analyst of everything that has to do with Apple, in an article published by Bloomberg. In exchange for a monthly amount, the subscriber could enjoy the iPhone and it would constitute an interesting novelty by creating a hardware subscription model that would extend to physical devices what many already consume associated with software or streaming platforms or services. Just like an Office 365 or Spotify subscription is paida monthly amount would be paid for having an iPhone.

When this information was disclosed, the response of the markets has been positive, increasing the price of Apple shares by 2.3%. This supports the good reception that the company’s economic results could have in betting on a model of leasing of its own products, managed by Apple itself. And it is that although there are already companies that offer these services of renting or leasing of electronic and computer devices, that it is Apple itself that happens to offer this service would mean a potentially successful new line of business.

It should be remembered that the iPhone is currently Apple’s largest source of sales, having last year generated some revenues greater than 192,000 million dollarswhich constitutes just over half of the company’s total annual revenue.

The prospect of spending a large amount to purchase an iPhone would have here the alternative of being able to have the same smartphone but in exchange for a lower amount of monthly subscription. With the added factor that, when another model appears on the market, the current subscription could be canceled, the terminal returned and establish a new subscription to the latest iPhone newly introduced. Something that would end, for example, with the eternal dilemmas between staying with last year’s iPhone or upgrading to the newly introduced one.

This subscription would also not be limited only to the iPhone, but Apple would also extend it to other products such as computers and tablets. The subscription would be made from the user’s own AppleID, as is done with subscriptions to online services such as iCloud, Apple Music or AppleTV +. In fact, it could also be included in Apple One.

It remains to determine the price that this subscription would have, if it would have a “permanence” of 12 or 24 months and, most importantly, the launch date, which could be at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2023… or even be delayed without a specified start date.
