Apple concluded on Monday (27) the purchase of startup WaveOne, a company working on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) for video compression. In this specific case, there was no official disclosure of the acquisition, however, the former head of development and business at WaveOne, Bob Stankosh, confirmed the sale.
According to information from the TechCrunch portal, the transaction was completed earlier this year, pointing to the interest of the Cupertino giant in the development of new technologies related to the AI segment. “After nearly two years at WaveOne, last week we finalized the sale of the company to Apple,” Stankosh wrote on his LinkedIn.
The reason for the purchase seems to be the AI-based video compression and decompression algorithm with cross-platform compatibility reaching both mobile and desktop. In summary, the technology is able to identify the elements of the scene by defining which items should be loaded in relation to the others, reducing the necessary bandwidth.
In the case of streaming platforms such as YouTube, the material is compressed on the server side, while the user’s device is responsible for decompressing the media. The technology created by WaveOne should improve the speed of the process precisely by identifying the priority.
