Apple bets on its own microLED technology, so as not to depend on external providers

Apple has been investing a considerable amount of money in microLED technology with the aim of gaining more control over the display supply and reducing its reliance on partners like Samsung.

This technology is expected to reach not only small devices like the Apple Watch, but also the iPhone, which has been Apple’s biggest revenue generator for years.

Apple advances in the development of microLED screens, to depend less on Samsung

The California-based company has research and development teams in the United States, Taiwan, and Japan, working hard to bring microLED technology to the mainstream market. Apple intends to do a “mass transfer” of self-manufacturing, and has invested at least $1 billion in microLED R&D and samples over the past decade. This entire process is carried out in secret in the Longtan District, in the city of Taoyuan, in northern Taiwan.

However, this path has not been without its difficulties, especially with regard to in-house produced microLED panels. The chips used in these displays are approximately 100 times smaller than the chips used in LED lighting products. To overcome these challenges, Apple has partnered with vendors such as ams-Osram for microLED parts, LG for the substrates, and TSMC for the wafers.

Not only has it designed the driver ICs that will be found in the microLED panels, but anonymous sources close to the company claim that Apple has even designed some of the production equipment to improve control of the bulk transfer process. Despite having a large display research and development team in the US, Japan and Taiwan, it is estimated that it will take Apple a few years to launch its first product with microLED technology.

The earliest timeline for its launch is in the year 2025. Given the complexities associated with producing larger screens, the Apple Watch Ultra is likely to be the first device to showcase this technology.
